Yoshida ShoinYoshida Shoin

Also known as: 吉田松陰・Shoin

Born in 1830 in Matsumoto village on the eastern edge of Hagi, the second son of a Hagi samurai named Sugi Yurinosuke, he was adopted into the Yoshida family of military-science instructors. After a failed attempt to stow away on Perry's fleet he was confined in the Noyama prison and then at the Sugi home, taught students there, and was executed in Edo in 1859 during the Ansei Purge.
