The Hagi domain school, founded in 1719 by the fifth lord Mori Yoshimoto in the third compound of Hagi Castle. Said to be the 12th of nearly 300 domain schools in Japan, it modelled its teaching and ceremonies on the Confucian shrine at Yushima. It moved to Ekata in 1849, and the former Meirin Elementary School building on the new grounds is now used as Hagi Meirin Gakusha.
