Ito HirobumiIto Hirobumi

Also known as: 伊藤博文

Japan's first prime minister (from 1885), who formed a cabinet four times. He was not born in Hagi: he was born in 1841 to a farming family in Tsukari village, in present-day Hikari, and his family moved to Hagi when his father was adopted into the Ito family of low-ranking retainers. In 1863 he was one of the "Choshu Five" who sailed secretly to Britain to study.
