Shokasonjuku AcademyShokasonjuku

Also known as: 松下村塾・Shokasonjuku

The academy's name was first used in 1842 by Shoin's uncle Tamaki Bunnoshin. The name passed to the school of Shoin's maternal uncle Kubo Gorozaemon and then to Shoin, who repaired a hut on the Sugi family grounds and opened his own school there in November 1857. The surviving single-story building has two rooms of eight and ten and a half mats, stands at Shoin Shrine, and is a national historic site and part of a World Heritage property.
