Takasugi ShinsakuTakasugi Shinsaku

Also known as: 高杉晋作・Takasugi

A Hagi samurai ranked with Kusaka Genzui as one of the two "jewels" of the Shokasonjuku academy. After seeing Shanghai in 1862 he raised the Kiheitai militia in 1863, open to men of any class. In the Second Choshu Expedition of 1866 he commanded the domain's navy, but his tuberculosis worsened; he convalesced in Shimonoseki and died in 1867 at 27 years and 8 months.
