Shimonoseki’s word for fugu, said without the voiced consonant. “Fugu” can echo the word for misfortune, while “fuku” echoes fortune and happiness, so the unvoiced form is felt to be lucky, and the GI-registered brand (October 2016) is “Shimonoseki Fuku”. Etymologies vary; a Heian-period dictionary, the Wamyo Ruijusho, already lists the word.
