Clear the Kanmon Local Quiz and earn the Kanmon Local title. Want to know Shimonoseki & Kanmon even better, or already confident? The tougher courses are next.
Shimonoseki sits at the western tip of Honshu, facing Kyushu across the Kanmon Strait. You can walk beneath the seabed to cross the prefectural border, or reach Moji by ferry in about five minutes. On weekends Karato Market lays out sushi topped with fugu (locals say fuku), and the port was once known as a city of whales. The strait is also where the Taira clan fell at Dannoura in 1185, where two swordsmen are said to have fought their duel on Ganryujima, and where the 1895 treaty ending the Sino-Japanese War was signed at Shunpanro. Farther afield are the clay-walled lanes of Chofu castle town and the long bridge to Tsunoshima. The quiz asks how well you know this sea, its daily life and its history.
