Tsuruga CastleTsuruga-jō

Also known as: Wakamatsu Castle・Aizuwakamatsu Castle

Gamo Ujisato completed a seven-story keep here in 1593 and named it Tsuruga Castle; its official name as a historic site is "Wakamatsu Castle Ruins." After a major earthquake damaged the castle in 1611, the Kato clan rebuilt the keep with five stories in the early Edo period, and today's reconstruction follows that five-story design. The castle withstood more than a month of siege during the Boshin War before surrendering in 1868.
