Niijima YaeNiijima Yae

Also known as: Yamamoto Yae

Born in the castle town of Wakamatsu as the daughter of an Aizu domain gunnery instructor, she cut her hair short, dressed as a man, and fought in the siege of Tsuruga Castle during the Boshin War carrying a Spencer repeating rifle. She later moved to Kyoto, married Doshisha founder Niijima Jo, and devoted herself to education and nursing.
