Satsuma RebellionSeinan Sensō

Also known as: Seinan War

Japan's last civil war, fought in 1877 when private-school students in Kagoshima rose up under the nominal leadership of Saigo Takamori. After heavy fighting including the siege of Kumamoto Castle, the rebels were defeated, and Saigo died by his own hand during the final government assault on Shiroyama on September 24.
