Kagoshima DialectKagoshima-ben

Also known as: Satsuma dialect・Satsugu dialect

The common name for the dialect spoken in the old Satsuma and Osumi regions, technically called Satsugu dialect. Its dropped consonants and distinctive accent are said to make it hard for standard-Japanese speakers to follow, and it is remembered for an episode during World War II when it was reportedly used over the phone as an improvised code.
