Saigo TakamoriSaigō Takamori

Also known as: Saigō-don・Nanshū

A samurai of Satsuma domain and central figure of the Meiji Restoration who helped lead the movement to overthrow the shogunate and later served in the new Meiji government, only to resign after the debate over invading Korea. He raised the Satsuma Rebellion against the government he had helped build and died at Shiroyama in Kagoshima in 1877.
