Tsurumaru Castle RuinsTsurumaru-jō
Also known as: Kagoshima Castle
The castle seat built from around 1601 by Shimazu Iehisa, the first lord of Satsuma domain. Its official name is Kagoshima Castle, though it is also called Tsurumaru Castle after the Shiroyama hill behind it. The Reimeikan museum now stands on the former main compound, and one of Japan's largest samurai gate structures was reconstructed here in 2020.
