The 28th head of the Shimazu clan and 11th lord of Satsuma domain, Nariakira launched the Shuseikan industrial project within his seven-year rule beginning in 1851, building reverberatory furnaces, Western-style shipyards, and a glassworks in Kagoshima that pioneered Japan's industrial modernization.
