Also known as: Kokufu

The younger half-brother of Shimazu Nariakira and father of the ruling lord Tadayoshi, Hisamitsu never became lord himself but effectively ran the domain as its “father of the nation.” His 1862 march on Kyoto with troops to press the shogunate for reform ended, on the way home, in the Namamugi Incident, which triggered the Anglo-Satsuma War.
