A unit of 16- and 17-year-old boys formed during the Siege of Aizu. When 20 members of its Shichu Ni-ban-tai squad retreated to Iimoriyama after the battle of Tonokuchihara and saw Tsuruga Castle wreathed in black smoke, they mistook it for a sign that the castle had fallen and all attempted suicide; 19 of them died.
