Jikkasegi Canal carries water roughly 15 kilometers from Hirase in Matsumoto to Hotaka-Kashiwabara in Azumino. It follows the roughly 570-meter contour line, with a drop of only about 5 meters in elevation across its entire length, a gradient of just 0.03 percent by design. Construction began in February 1816 and was completed by May of the same year, a project remembered for how much was achieved in just about three months. The name "Jikka" (ten) comes from the ten villages that petitioned for its construction, later joined by an eleventh. In 2006, it was named one of Japan's Top 100 Irrigation Canals by the agriculture ministry.
