Whaling City (Kujira no Machi)Kujira no Machi
Also known as: くじらの街・くじらの街下関・鯨の街
A nickname of Shimonoseki. It is regarded as the birthplace of modern whaling and served as a base for Antarctic whaling before and after the war. The baseball team Taiyo Whales was born here after the war, and since commercial whaling resumed in 2019 the city has been the base for offshore factory-ship whaling.
