Tsunoshima whaleTsunoshima kujira
Also known as: ツノシマクジラ・Balaenoptera omurai
A baleen whale described as a new species in 2003. One that died after colliding with a fishing boat in the waters between Tsunoshima and the mainland in September 1998 was found by the National Museum of Nature and Science and others to be an unknown species, and its Japanese name comes from where the specimen was found. The species name omurai in Balaenoptera omurai honors Dr. Omura Hideo, regarded as the founder of Japanese whale science.
