Satsuma Student MissionSatsuma-han Eikoku Ryūgakusei

In 1865, defying the shogunate's ban on overseas travel, Satsuma domain secretly sent 19 young men to study in Britain. They departed from Hashima, in present-day Ichikikushikino City, and after returning home went on to shape modern Japan in fields from education to business, including figures such as Mori Arinori and Godai Tomoatsu.
