Terashima MunenoriTerashima Munenori

Also known as: Matsuki Koan

Originally named Matsuki Koan, Terashima was taken prisoner by the British during the Anglo-Satsuma War, yet just two years later, in 1865, he led the group of young Satsuma students on their secret voyage to study in that very country. After the Restoration he served as Foreign Minister, signing the treaty exchanging Sakhalin for the Kuril Islands with Russia.
