Osaka CastleOsaka-jo
Also known as: 大坂城・大阪城
The symbol of Osaka, begun by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1583 on the former site of Ishiyama Honganji. Gold-leaf tiles and high stone walls displayed a unifier's prestige, but the Toyotomi-era keep was lost in the Sieges of Osaka; the present keep is a 1931 reinforced-concrete reconstruction.
