Shimazu YoshihiroShimazu Yoshihiro

Also known as: Ishin・Demon Shimazu

The 17th head of the Shimazu clan, nicknamed “Demon Shimazu” for his battlefield ferocity, Yoshihiro defeated a much larger Ming-Korean army at Sacheon in 1598 and famously broke straight through enemy lines at Sekigahara in 1600 to escape back to Satsuma. Korean potters he brought home founded the Satsuma-yaki pottery tradition.
