Kakiyama (Carried Racing Float)Kakiyama

Also known as: 舁き山・舁き縄・水法被

The low, portable floats carried and raced at full speed during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. Teams of men dressed in loincloths and water-soaked happi jackets (mizu-happi) shoulder the float using thick ropes (kaki-nawa). Multiple teams rotate carrying duties as the float races through the streets, and times are recorded competitively in the Oiyama race.
