Nagare (Yamakasa Community Unit)Nagare

The territorial community units into which old Hakata neighborhoods are organized for the purpose of operating Yamakasa floats. Each nagare is responsible for building and carrying one kakiyama float during the Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. The honor of starting the Oiyama race first (ichi-ban) rotates among the nagare annually. The system is believed to originate from Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Taiko-Machiwari town grid replotting.
