Omijima Whale TombOmijima Kujira-baka
Also known as: 青海島鯨墓・鯨墓・Kujira-baka・Whale Tomb
A grave in Kayoi on Omijima, Nagato, for the unborn calves of whales caught by the local whalers. It was erected in 1692 by the head of the whaling group and about seventy whale fetuses were buried there over more than two centuries into the Meiji era. Made of granite and 2.4 m tall, it became a national historic site in 1935.
