Wakaejima Harbor Ruins

Japan's oldest surviving artificial harbor ruin, visible off Zaimokuza Beach at low tide. Tradition holds it was built in just one month in 1232 at the request of the monk Oamidabutsu, with the cooperation of the Kamakura shogunate under Hojo Yasutoki. Most of the designated site lies within Kamakura, but a portion falls within Zushi's Kotsubo district.
