Dr. Baelz
German physician Erwin von Balz taught medicine at Tokyo Imperial University and, from the 1880s, visited Hayama repeatedly, praising its mild climate and terrain as ideal for recuperation, a recommendation that helped bring the Imperial Villa to the area. He reportedly built his own villa in Horiuchi around 1893.
