国衙 (kokuga)

Also known as: 国衙・周防国衙・kokuga

The government office where provincial governors worked under the ritsuryo system. The Hofu district name 国衙 (Kokuga) marks the place at the southern foot of Mt. Tatara where the Suo provincial capital's administrative hall stood, and it is read Kokuga. The character 衙 is absent from everyday vocabulary, so "Kokue" is a natural slip.
