Also known as: 下関戦争・Bombardment of Shimonoseki

The clashes between Choshu and Western powers at the Kanmon Strait. In 1863 Choshu fired on foreign ships passing through, and in 1864 a combined fleet of 17 ships from Britain, France, the Netherlands and the United States attacked the batteries at Shimonoseki. Choshu defended with a little over a hundred guns and fewer than 2,000 men.
