Nishi no NaniwaNishi no Naniwa

Also known as: 西の浪華・西の浪速・西の浪花

A nickname of Shimonoseki, then called Akamagaseki, in the domain era. As a hub of the northern sea route, it drew ships loaded with goods from the northeast, Hokuriku, Kyushu and Shikoku, and was said to see a thousand ships leave and a thousand arrive. The bustle earned a comparison with Osaka, then written Naniwa.
