Izumi KyokaIzumi Kyoka

A novelist born in 1873 in the Shinmachi district of Kanazawa. A disciple of Ozaki Koyo, he established his reputation as a writer with the 1900 story Koya Hijiri, or The Holy Man of Mount Koya. In 1973, marking the centennial of his birth, Kanazawa city established the Izumi Kyoka Prize for Literature, said to be the first literature prize of its kind sponsored by a Japanese municipal government.
