yabusame

Yabusame is a Shinto ritual of mounted archery in which riders shoot at three wooden targets while galloping. At Tsurugaoka Hachimangu it is performed every September 16 during the annual grand festival, with archers in Kamakura-era hunting attire racing down a 260-meter track. Its origin traces to a hojo-e ceremony held before Yoritomo in 1187, carried on today by the Ogasawara school.
