Kamakura-bori

Kamakura-bori is a traditional craft of carving wood and then lacquering the surface. It is said to have begun in the Kamakura period when Buddhist sculptors such as Koun (or, by another account, Koen) devised a simpler way to make ritual implements for Zen temples, inspired by the carved-lacquer (tsuishu) techniques brought over from Song-dynasty China. It was designated a national Traditional Craft in 1979.
