Great Buddha of Kamakura

The Great Buddha at Kotoku-in is a bronze seated Amida Nyorai and Kamakura's only National Treasure statue. Casting is believed to have started in 1252; the figure stands about 11.3m tall (13.35m including the pedestal) and weighs roughly 121 tons. It has sat in the open air ever since a tsunami from the 1498 Meio earthquake swept away the hall that once covered it.
