Genpei Pond

Genpei Pond sits beside the approach to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, said to have been commissioned by Hojo Masako. The eastern Genji Pond has three islands, the western Heike Pond has four — a wordplay design, since “three” (san) echoes “birth/prosperity” and “four” (shi) echoes “death,” wishing prosperity on the Minamoto and downfall on the Taira.
