Beginning on January 12, 1914, this is considered the largest-scale eruption in Japan since the 20th century began. Ash plumes reached roughly 18,000 meters, and the lava that poured out filled the Seto Strait, permanently connecting Sakurajima to the Osumi Peninsula. It killed or left missing 58 people.
