Genkō (Mongol Invasions of Japan)Genkō

Also known as: 元寇・蒙古襲来・文永の役・弘安の役

Two Mongol invasions launched against Japan during the Kamakura period, both targeting Hakata Bay in northern Kyushu. The first invasion occurred in 1274 (Bun'ei no Eki) and the second in 1281 (Kōan no Eki). Japanese samurai repelled both forces, aided by storms the Japanese called kamikaze (divine winds). The invasions prompted construction of stone coastal defenses.
