Navy curry originated when the Meiji-era Imperial Japanese Navy, plagued by beriberi from a rice-heavy diet, adapted the British Royal Navy's curried stew as a nutritional fix. It was thickened to pair better with rice and to keep it from spilling on a rolling ship.
