Dejima
Dejima is the fan-shaped artificial island Nagasaki's magistrate built in 1636 on the shogunate's orders. The Dutch trading post moved here from Hirado in 1641, making it Japan's only sanctioned window for trade with the West during the country's seclusion. Only a limited number of Japanese — officials and courtesans among them — were allowed to enter.
