Tochoji TempleTōchōji
Also known as: 東長寺
A Shingon Buddhist temple in Hakata-ku, traditionally said to have been founded by the monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) after he returned from Tang Dynasty China. The temple houses the Fukuoka Daibutsu — one of Japan's largest wooden seated Buddhas — as well as a five-story pagoda. A walkthrough passage beneath the statue symbolizes traveling from hell to paradise.
