Sumiyoshi Shrine (Hakata)Sumiyoshi-jinja

Also known as: 住吉神社

An ancient shrine located near Hakata Station in Hakata-ku, dedicated to the three Sumiyoshi deities associated with the sea and safe voyages. It is claimed to be among the oldest of Japan's Sumiyoshi shrines, pre-dating or rivaling those in Osaka and Shimonoseki. The wooded grounds offer a tranquil retreat within the busy city center.
