Shofukuji Temple (Japan's First Zen Temple)Shōfukuji

Also known as: 聖福寺・栄西

A Rinzai Zen temple in Hakata traditionally claimed to be the first Zen temple established in Japan. Founded by the monk Eisai (Yosai) after returning from Song Dynasty China, it received the inscribed plaque 'Fuso Saisho Zenku' (First Zen Monastery in the Land of Japan) from Retired Emperor Go-Toba.
