Korokan (Ancient Diplomatic Guesthouse)Kōrokan

Also known as: 鴻臚館

A state diplomatic guesthouse operated during the Asuka through Heian periods for receiving foreign envoys, primarily from Tang Dynasty China and Silla (Korea). One of only three such institutions in ancient Japan, its site near present-day Fukuoka Castle was confirmed through archaeological excavations. It was a crucial node in ancient East Asian diplomatic exchange.
