Susa HornfelsSusa Hornfels
Also known as: 須佐ホルンフェルス・畳岩・Tatami-iwa
The white-and-black striped cliff called Tatami-iwa on the Susa Bay coast. Gabbro magma from the Koyama area pushed into alternating sand and mud layers on the Sea of Japan seabed, and the heat baked them into hornfels. It is a remnant of the Sea of Japan's formation about 20 to 15 million years ago and a Hagi Geopark site.
