History・Yokosuka

Yokosuka Iron Works

Proposed by shogunate finance commissioner Oguri Tadamasa with French technical support, the Yokosuka Ironworks broke ground on November 15, 1865. Under chief engineer François Léonce Verny, its first dry dock was completed in 1871, when it was renamed Yokosuka Shipyard. The stone dry dock it built is still in use inside the US naval base today.
