開作 (kaisaku)

Also known as: 開作・kaisaku

Land reclaimed from the sea, and the work of reclaiming it. Along the Inland Sea it was also called shinkai. Tied to the Hagi domain's drive to open new paddies, it survives in town-area names such as Tsumazaki-gaisaku (Ube) and Furu-gaisaku (Sanyo-Onoda and Yanai). Urayama-kaisaku in Shunan keeps the plain kaisaku.
