Todai-ji Temple

Founded in the 8th century at the request of Emperor Shomu, Todai-ji is the head temple of the Kegon school. Its principal image, the Rushana Buddha (the Great Buddha of Nara), had its eye-opening ceremony in 752 as a national project meant to protect the realm.
