A domain school founded in 1841 by Tokugawa Nariaki, the 9th lord of Mito Domain, emphasizing both scholarship and martial arts. It became one of the largest domain schools in the country, and its Main Gate, Main Hall, and Shizendo Hall survive today as Important Cultural Properties.
