Central Kagoshima's largest downtown shopping and entertainment arcade district takes its name from the Meijikan, also called Tenmonkan, an astronomical observatory and calendar-making institute built in 1779 by lord Shimazu Shigehide. Today it is Kagoshima's largest covered arcade district.
